Runners Briefing

Thanks for registering for Big Forest Run! We look forward to welcoming you to the stunning Yarra State Forest for a great morning of running! Please take the time to read through this race briefing to ensure you are prepared for the event.

RACE REGISTRATION – change of location!

Please note the new race registration area at St Josephs Primary School, Milners Rd, Yarra Junction.

You will be able to collect your race bibs at this location on:

Friday 18th April from 3pm to 6pm

Saturday 19th April from 6am to 9am

On the day registrations are also available on Friday only. On the day registrations will incur a $15 surcharge.

Race shirts can be collected from here (if purchased with online entry). Race shirts will also be available for purchase.


42km Race

Buses depart from St Josephs Primary School at 7.15am sharp. Bus transport is included in your race entry.

Please do not plan to drive to the start area at Big Creek Basin Road – there is very limited parking available, so this is not recommended. Please do not drive yourself to the start area and leave your car there.

Race start is at 8.15am.

18km Race

Buses depart from St Josephs Primary School at 9.00am sharp. If you have purchased bus transport with your entry, you will be given at ticket at registration. Bus transport can be purchased at race registration, provided there is still availability on the bus.

You may choose to have someone drop you at the start area and watch the start, and there should be adequate parking there for this. Driving is on good quality forest roads suitable for 2wd other than in wet weather.

Please do not drive yourself to the start are and leave your car there.

Race start is 10am.

Please be courteous to all other trail users throughout the race.


Please ensure you come prepared with your mandatory gear:

You will be required to carry the following:

  • Ability to carry 1.5 litres of fluid

  • Mobile phone with full charge in waterproof bag (zip loc or similar is adequate)

  • Course map (collected at race registration)

You will be advised at race registration whether the following mandatory gear items will be required:

  • Waterproof jacket (Breathable rain jacket, must have sealed seams and hood. Not acceptable would include plastic rain poncho, non proofed/treated or non membrane fabrics or polyurethane coated fabrics)

  • Beanie
  • Thermal long pants
  • Thermal long top (Thermal pants and top must be polypropylene acrylic or similar synthetic or wool)

  • High vis vest (to be dropped at Aid Station 3, and collected if needed, to be worn to provide higher visibility at road sections of course)

All mandatory gear is required for both the 42km and 18km race. You will not be permitted to run if you do not have these items. Random spot checks may occur during the race, and time penalties will be applied if you are not carrying the required gear.


If you have any gear you would like taken to the finish line, you can leave this at race registration. Please ensure bags are clearly labeled for easy recognition. No bags will be dropped onto the course; this is an option for the finish line only.


Please refer to maps for aid station locations on the course. Aid stations will supply water – there is a ‘no cup’ policy in place, you will be able to fill your hydration packs / bottles.


The best locations for spectators to visit are as follows:

Aid Station 1 (42km race only) – Ada Trees Reserve

Aid Station 2 (42km race only & 18km start area) – Starling Gap

Aid Station 3 (42km and 18km races) – Big Pats

Finish Area (210 Riverside Drive, Warburton) – Please park courteously and do not obstruct traffic. Runners will arrive at the finish running along Riverside Drive. For this reason, parking will not be permitted west of 210 Riverside Drive. Please obey marshal instructions, this is for the safety of the runners.

FINISH AREA – 210 Riverside Drive, Warburton.

Post race presentation will be held at the finish area at 2pm. If you are a prize winner, you must be at the presentation to collect your prize, they will not be posted later on. There will also be a post race BBQ and water and Hammer Nutrition Heed available. You might like to take a refreshing post race dip in the Yarra River!

Shuttle bus transport will be available for all runners and spectators from the finish area back to Warburton and the rego area at St Josephs Primary School in Yarra Junction.


There is the possibility of a picking up some leeches out on the course – these little suckers are not harmful, but you may consider wearing long socks to keep them off your ankles. We’ll have salt available at aid stations and the finish area in case you pick any up during the race.
